Bear Flies High by Michael Rosen. Illustrated by Adrian Reynolds
Bear Flies High is the new release by Michael Rosen, Children's Laureate and author of the popular We're Going on a Bear Hunt. Bear is playing on a beach when he decides he would love to fly just like the seagulls. Luckily for him he has four friends who are more than willing to help and the children take him to a fair where they have a go on all the rides before trying a great big rollercoaster! It's a story about friends helping each other out and having fun.
This is almost identical to We're Going on a Bear Hunt with the story written in a question and answer theme with plenty of repetition and easy rhymes. These aren't exactly the most challenging or exciting rhymes, however, and mostly consist of repeating the same words over again:
"Follow follow
Follow follow
Follow follity follow"
In fact the story seems rather lifeless and this is not helped by the plain illustrations that seem rather uninspired. There is nothing to really grab the attention or fire the imagination, so while the story is relaxing enough to read it will not be remembered in years to come as a favourite among young children.
Still, if you and your child enjoyed the first of these books then you should appreciate this addition to the bear's adventures. There is also a CD of the author reading the story aloud; a welcome and pleasant addition which will hopefully catch on with all picture books.
Our thanks to Bloomsbury for sending us a copy.
